I think the thing with photography is that you can quite easily loose yourself and start doing what everyone else is because it works for them and that’s the “in” thing. But we didn’t get into this art form to just be another sheep did we?
For me at least, I got too set on just trying to find a way to make money from photography and get out of my current job and lost sight of why I started doing it in the first place. I was doing things and learning things just because you could make money from that sort of photography “easier” but that just leads to you not doing and shooting what you love. Which is definitely not the route I had planned to go down nor was it the route I wanted to go down now. So I stopped doing all of that stuff and just went back to my original plan and sat down and scheduled my time out around that.
This is where personal projects come in, I decided that I wanted to get better at street photography because I enjoy doing it and find it a great challenge. So I started the Humans Of Leicester project. The humans project has been done so many times in so many places but I didn’t care. I was doing it for no one else but me, I thought it would be a great way to get better at taking pictures of strangers in the street and give myself a reason for doing it too. Then I started a second project Family Portraits which was for me and my family, the main reason I got into photography was to capture moments and memories and saver them forever. So what better than doing a family portrait project? It was truly something just for me. I had just gotten a flash and triggers to so I could do off camera flash and make a little run and gun studio set-up. Which would allow me to go around my families houses with not too much gear and do it. Not only would it just be a personal project but it would help me learn portrait photography the way I wanted to do it.
So whether you start a personal project for reasons just like mine or not they definitely give your photography more meaning, make it more fun and allow you to just be YOU!!!
Let me know below if you’re going to start a personal project or if you already have one then let me know what it is? I would love to hear your guys stories too!
