I have been wanting one of Platon’s Photo books ever since I found out about his work and Tabitha finally got me one for Christmas. So I thought I would do a review/look through of it as it is so good!
So here is Service Platon.
I have always liked portraits but not the usual fake/setup ones that you get for make up adverts and alike. I like the raw and emotional ones, the ones that you get real felling from and that tell stories. I had always thought that this could never make you a living and that you would have to do the fake/setup ones to make ends meet. This was my idea about portrait photography when I was thinking about trying photography as a money maker and not just a hobby. I had quite a few conversations with other photographs that was currently making a living from photography and they all said that this style of portraits could not make you a living and that you had to do the fake/setup ones to make ends meet.
This is when I just wrote off portraits all together as I thought that I could never make anything of it doing it how I wanted to so id just rather not bother.
Then I watched a TV series on Netflix called Abstract – The Art Of Design – Platon.
This was the exact style I was thinking and wanting to do. Raw, Emotional and Bold. And this guy was making a living from it! I loved his work from the moment I seen it, not just for how good it was but for the fact that it made me realise that no matter your style or ambitions you didn’t have to follow the crowd and do the same as everyone else, yes doing it this way might be harder to make money from and it might be more of a niche but if this guy can do it then why cant I? That is how I felt after watching that episode.
What a feeling!
So I decided to look to see what photobooks he had available and he had three main ones that I could find. Service Platon, Power: Portraits Of World Leaders and Platon’s Republic. Out of the three I thought that Service Platon caught my eye the most as this had a lot of meaning and emotion in it which is what I was looking for. As it was coming up to Christmas Tabitha said that she would get me it but I would have to wait till Christmas. Can you imagine how annoying this was? I had to wait for a couple months! And I am very impatient at the best of times.
So I waited! Because then I didn't have to pay for it. Wouldn't you?
So Christmas arrived and I finally got what I had waited months for, now it best not be a let down! And boy it was not. It was better than I thought it would be to be honest, I wasn’t expecting it to be as powerful or as heart felt as it was. Not only that it is not all just portraits there is a variety of photos in there more portrait/documentary style. Which just works perfectly with the message he is trying to get across. I think there are too many book reviews with loads of details and writing about the book so I’m going to show my favourite images and then write a bit below and then a conclusion at the end so its not just another photo book review!
I couldn't recommend this book highly enough, it has a variety of photos in so its not just about a specific genre or anything. it just has a very powerful and heartfelt story to tell.
